Strawberry Banana Cacao Smoothie Bowl

Whenever I have a choice between a smoothie or a smoothie bowl for breakfast, I always go for the bowl. I love being able to scoop out my smoothie with a spoon. Something about it just makes it more satisfying. Plus, I can’t forget about the toppings – they take the smoothie to another level. The contrast of the creamy smoothie with the fresh fruit and crunchy toppings is my favorite part.

I’m a chocoholic so I love adding chocolate to things whenever possible. Smoothie bowls are the perfect candidate for this.

While I haven’t tried it, if you don’t have cacao powder, you could try subbing with cocoa powder instead. I would love to hear how it tastes if you try it!

Cacao powder vs. cocoa powder, what’s the difference?  Both are made from cacao beans, but the main difference is in the temperature used during processing. For cocoa powder, the cacao beans are roasted before being pressed to separate the oils from the solids, which turn into the powder. For cacao powder, cacao beans are not roasted and are processed at very low temperatures. They also taste different, cacao powder tends to be more bitter than cocoa powder.

Start by combining the almond milk, frozen strawberries, frozen banana, dates, cacao powder, almond butter, and salt in a blender. Blend until creamy – don’t over blend! I’ve noticed that if I blend too long, everything will essentially get pulverized and the smoothie becomes super liquidy, as opposed to the thicker consistency we are looking for here.
